Mission Moment: Our Impact In Action

Jun 29, 2023

To celebrate the ending of the school year, we are bringing a Mission Moment to you from one of our 3rd grade OST participants. This student was new to the US and the Y last year and is learning English as his second language. He was assigned to write an opinion paper at school and chose to write about Y staff appreciation. This student thrived at the WSYMCA quickly making friends with other OST program participants, as well as staff. Please enjoy a summary of the opinion paper below.

“I’m going to teach you why we need to appreciate the Y staff. My explanation is 1+0+0 which equals 100%! We need to appreciate the YMCA staff because they teach us how to play new games, like Dungeons and Dragons. There is also 3 arcade games that we get to play if we show good behavior. You might be thinking, ‘I will just play video games at home!’ That’s true, but playing people online is different than playing eye to eye. Plus, some people can not play at home. Another reason to appreciate the staff at the Y is that if the staff weren’t there, only one person would take care of 51 people! Do you know how much work it would be? You might be thinking that one person could get more employees, but if the new people weren’t appreciated by us, they would quit. Plus, if there was not enough staff to run the OST program I would have to go home. The YMCA is a better place to be after school because I can’t play video games at home (on weekdays). It’s important to appreciate the Y staff. Here’s 3 ways you can do that: 1. You can write a love letter to them saying thank you. 2. You can say something kind to them. 3. You can bake or cook something for them.”

We are so proud of our 3rd grader and all the accomplishments they have made, in and out of the Y. Your opinion matters and we agree that the Y staff deserves appreciation. We are so grateful for this love letter!
