Spring has sprung! With the weather getting warmer each day, it's is a great time to get outside and enjoy nature.

One way you can become more in tune with nature is by "adopting" a tree! Choose a tree to observe over time, deepening your awareness, understanding, and appreciation of an individual tree. Take a photo or draw a picture of the tree and write down your observations.

Use all of your senses to describe the tree and become better acquainted with it. What does it look like? Do you see buds, roots, leaves? Are there signs your tree may be home to a friendly critter, like a nest or hollowed trunk? What does it smell like? What does the tree feel like when you touch it? Is it rough? Smooth? What do you hear? Are there birds chirping nearby? Does the wind shake the branches? Try to go through all of your senses and track your observations.

Visit your tree every week to observe new changes!

Other Ideas to Enhance Your Tree-doption!

  • Choose a tree that is within walking distance of your home, but not in your yard, so you get some extra physcial activity each time you visit it.
  • Create a tree rubbing to get a good look at your tree's texture! Use paper against the tree's bark and color over the paper with crayons.
  • Find out what type of tree you've adopted and look up three facts new facts about its species.
  • Once you've discovered what type of tree you've adopted, see if you can use your observations to identify a different tree of the same species.
