Y For Good Fund

In response to Covid-19

For the Greater Good

The West Suburban YMCA has served Newton and surrounding towns for over 143 years and our building on Church Street has bustled with activity since 1914. But the Y is not simply a building and being part of the Y is more than signing up for an activity. It’s a movement of people – it’s all of us, united in our efforts to strengthen community. Now, our building may be closed, but our commitment to helping people and inspiring action for the greater good is stronger than ever.

Caring for our Community

The Y has a history of stepping up when our communities need us most. In response to the COVID-19 crisis, we have swiftly pivoted to deliver on our mission in innovative ways and stay connected, even when we are apart.

Community Care:

  • Virtual workouts and guided meditations help our community stay active and manage unprecedented stress.
  • Wellness checks reduce isolation for our most vulnerable members- older adults, cancer survivors, and financial aid recipients- while assessing needs and connecting to resources.
  • Ongoing connections with the 26 formerly homeless men who live at Newton Corner Place, our Single Resident Occupancy housing development, ensure their health and safety.
  • In partnership with the Newton Food Pantry, we’re deploying our staff to deliver groceries to seniors throughout the city.

Youth Care:

  • Virtual activities deepen connections with preschoolers, out-of-school time students, and youth athletes.
  • Parents continue to rely on the Y as a trusted resource while their kids get to practice skills and feel a sense of team outside of our building.
  • Camp teams are preparing for operations, knowing our kids will need camp more than ever this summer.

Staff Care:

  • All staff scheduled to work were paid during the first two weeks of the facility closure.
  • We have transitioned to a lean staffing model while still providing 100% of benefits to all furloughed employees through June.
  • A Staff Emergency Relief Fund will provide extra resources to staff facing financial hardships.

Y For Good

Now more than ever, our community needs us to come together for the greater good. We can’t do it alone. Our community can help in three key ways:

  1. We are asking all members to become sustaining members and keep their memberships active so we can continue to deliver essential services. All fees will be acknowledged as a tax-deductible donation to the Y For Good Fund.
  2. Donations to the Y For Good Fund will support the community and enable us to continue our critical work. Any gift can be left unrestricted or focused on a specific effort.
  3. As the situation develops, we will have expanded volunteer opportunities for our community to give back. These roles will be posted on the volunteer page of our website and consistently updated.
