Sign Up Now for Summer Camps

Jan 21, 2021

Registration is open for the West Suburban YMCA’s summer camp season. Y camps offer kids an engaging environment where they build confidence, make new friends, feel a sense of belonging, and create memories that will last a lifetime. The West Suburban YMCA offers three summer camps: Camp Pikati, Camp Chickami, and Camp Frank A. Day.

Camp Pikati is a day camp that operates on-site at the West Suburban YMCA in Newton. Children between the ages of 3 to 13 can attend, and free healthy lunch is available to all, provided through the state’s Summer Eats program. Sessions are one week in length, Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Campers play traditional camp games, sports, arts and crafts, swimming, relay races, archery, and more.

Camp Chickami is a traditional outdoor day camp located in Wayland on a beautiful, wooded property that borders conservation land. Children who are entering grades 1-10 are welcome to attend. Sessions are one week in length, Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Campers participate in classic camp activities such as archery, arts and crafts, and swimming, while also embracing unique and creative Chickami traditions such as exploring Mud City, building a Campsite and crowning Chowderhead of the Week!

Camp Frank A. Day is a traditional co-ed overnight camp located an hour west of Boston in East Brookfield. Campers, who range in age from 7 to 16, live in rustic cabins or platform tents, with groups determined by age and gender identification. Two sessions, each three weeks in length, will be offered in 2021. Campers fill their days with activities like archery, ultimate frisbee, drama, arts and crafts, swimming, canoeing, fishing, sailing, and more. Color War, Plaque, Olympics, and Coffee House are a few of the beloved camp traditions.

Summer Camp and COVID-19
During the summer of 2020, the Y operated a fun and safe camp experience for hundreds of children! While safety and health at camp has always been the top priority, the Y recognizes that the upcoming summer will again be different in terms of safety precautions. West Suburban YMCA summer camps anticipate operating in a similar manner to 2020, continuing the many new habits all of us have adopted, from social distancing to mask wearing, to new sanitation procedures and healthcare protocols. Other strategies used to mitigate risk at camp include operating a “closed” camp (no visitors, including parents), staggered drop-off and pick-up times, daily health screenings, camper cohorts, an emphasis on hand hygiene, and modified games and activities to facilitate social distancing.
