Mobile Vaccine Clinic Comes to YMCA Camp Frank A. Day

Jun 19, 2021

Residential camp secures vaccinations for international staff and counselors

East Brookfield, MA – Camp Frank A. Day in East Brookfield, owned and operated by the West Suburban YMCA, is ensuring the safest possible summer experience for its campers and employees. The co-ed residential camp has a long history of welcoming international staff, and this year will be no different.  While some international staff will arrive vaccinated, the camp has secured doses of the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine that will be administered to unvaccinated camp counselors and staff via a mobile vaccination site on June 21. Organized through Mass DPH, the mobile vaccine site will roll into the residential camp in East Brookfield the day after camp staff arrive to start their training.

West Suburban YMCA Chief Operating Officer, Kimberly Benzan, says this is a crucial step in ensuring the health and safety of all campers and camp employees for the summer. In addition to vaccinating its camp staff, the Y is requiring all campers to provide a negative COVID-19 test result when they check in on the first day of the three-week session. Further, all campers will be tested a second time five days after arrival. Finally, the camp will follow all CDC, state, and local COVID-19 guidelines.

While Camp Frank A. Day did not operate in 2020, the West Suburban YMCA’s day camps were among the few full day summer programs that operated. The day camps – Camp Chickami in Wayland and Camp Pikati at the West Suburban YMCA in Newton – served over 300 children per day through nine weeks in the summer of 2020 and maintained zero known COVID-19 cases. Staff and campers alike at Camp Frank A. Day are looking forward to returning to the shores of the lakefront property and will be managing camp with the same care and diligence of its day camp counterparts.
