For over 20 years, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (Monday, January 15, 2018) has encouraged individuals to volunteer their time to improve their communities. Here at the WEST SUBURBAN YMCA, we’re encouraging everyone in Newton to use this day as a call to action to get involved—in large or small ways—to make our communities better. We’ve seen it in action as we rely on hundreds of volunteers to do everything from serve on our board to coach our basketball teams. Each of our volunteers’ selflessness and willingness to roll up their sleeves to give back helps improve the lives of thousands of kids, adults and families yearly.

This Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I encourage you to find a local program or organization that is meaningful to you and give them a call. Volunteer opportunities are available throughout the city and at our YMCA.

In addition, I’d like to invite you to the 50th Anniversary MLK Community Celebration! In partnership with the City of Newton’s Mayor’s Office, School Department, the Y, Newton Clergy Association, Myrtle Baptist Church, the Harmony Foundation and thanks to the sponsorship of The Village Bank, Newton’s historic First Baptist Church will host the Community Celebration on Monday, January 15, 9:30 a.m. at First Baptist – 848 Beacon Street in Newton Centre. In addition to remarks by Mayor Fuller there will be performances by Newton’s All City Treble Singers, Troubadors, Newton North Jubilee Singers, the Monologue Project: Voices of Color and the Love Tones. This colorful musical, visual and spoken tribute will be a salute to the extraordinary legacy of Dr. King. Free and open to the public! On the occasion Newton Rotary will be collecting toiletries for Newton’s food pantries.
