Five Reasons Why Kids Should Attend Summer Camp

Jun 14, 2018

YMCA camp programs offer a fun and unique experience that give children and teens the opportunity to have their #BestSummerEver! Here are five reasons why your kids should attend summer camp:

1. ADVENTURE: Summer camp is all about a wide variety of new experiences, and especially exploring the outdoors. YMCA camps have a new adventure for every child and teen. When campers try their hand at archery, challenge themselves on the ropes or climbing wall or explore the natural world around them, they have the opportunity to discover something wonderful and unexpected along the way!

2. HEALTHY FUN: Day and overnight camps offer fun, stimulating activities that engage the body and mind and help children and teens learn the importance of healthy living. Research shows that without access to out-of-school physical and learning activities, kids fall behind academically and gain weight twice as fast during summer than the school year. At camp, kids leave their cellphones and devices at home, and their days are filled with activities that keep their brains and body active and engaged.

3. PERSONAL GROWTH: While in the welcoming environment of camp, youth are encouraged to learn new skills, and they develop confidence and independence by taking on new responsibilities and challenges. Camps offer cognitive learning and social-emotional development opportunities for achievement. Whether campers are helping with flag ceremony, setting a personal goal on the challenge course or sharing a hidden talent with peers, camp is a dynamic environment for personal growth.

4. FRIENDSHIPS: Amidst the fun of camp games, songs, swimming, canoeing and talent shows, campers meet new friends and strengthen existing friendships. The bonds formed at camp are important and lasting for many youth. Friends become like family, and campers leave with a strong sense of belonging.

5. MEMORIES: Summer camp is an unforgettable experience that will give each camper memories and instill camp traditions that will last a lifetime. Youth return to school with plenty of camp stories to share. Whether it’s winning at gaga ball, finding a frog, Color War rivalries or making friendship bracelets, camp memories stick like shoes in the mud!
