Important Information for Members on Pool Closings

Dear West Suburban YMCA Member:
On Wednesday, 8/24 the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) received an anonymous complaint about our Y. The specifics of that complaint have not been made available to us. A DEP inspector arrived on-site in the afternoon to inform us of this complaint and to take samples from the pools and construction areas. The YMCA took the precautionary measure of closing our pools while this testing is being processed. We have no reason to believe the air quality in the pools is not safe, but to act in the most cautious manner, and with the safety of our members, staff and vendors in mind, we have decided to close the pools until the test results can be completed.
We believe our construction firm has taken all measures to ensure a safe workplace and we are committed to providing a safe environment for members, guests and YMCA staff. We will work with the DEP and take whatever measures necessary to ensure a healthy environment for all. The building renovation project has moved to Phase 2, which includes demolition and renovations in our Lobby area.
The YMCA has complied with all our health standards and testing. Neither pool is a part of the renovation work being done. As you know, our pools are a critical aspect of our offered services. The YMCA is trying to better understand from the DEP what triggered samples to be taken outside the construction area.
As of now, the both pools will remain closed until the air quality test results are returned. We apologize for this inconvenience and encourage you to take full advantage of the ‘My Y is Every Y in New England’ benefit and visit the Oak Square YMCA in Brighton, or the Waltham YMCA during this time.
