Pool Closing Update

Aug 26, 2016

On Wednesday, 8/24 the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) received an anonymous complaint about our Y. The specifics of that complaint were not made available to us and we have no indication of their nature. A DEP inspector arrived on-site to inform us of this complaint and to take samples from the pools and construction areas. The YMCA took the precautionary measure of closing our pools while this testing was being processed. At the time, we had no reason to believe any part of our building was unsafe. Nevertheless, we decided to act in the most cautious manner, and with the safety of our members, staff and vendors in mind, we closed the pools until the test results can be completed.

We immediately engaged a third party, independent firm to test and guide us on proper steps required to ensure a safe environment.

Those tests have been completed. Tests conducted in the large pool show no hazards. As a result, we have re-opened this pool.

Tests conducted in the small pool found no hazards. There is contained asbestos in a section of pipe insulation. This was a common way of insulating pipes in the past. If this wrapping is in good condition and not disturbed, it poses no threat to humans. The small pool was scheduled to be closed for its annual cleaning beginning tonight (Friday, 8/26). As a result, the small pool will remain closed for that cleaning.

Tests conducted in the construction area found asbestos in a floor glue. This glue is a layer below the working surface. With this potential in mind, on Thursday prior to knowing the test results, we hired an additional company who specializes in asbestos containment and abatement to reseal the work area.  We believe our construction firm took all measures to ensure a safe workplace for their employees and the YMCA staff and members. This step is an additional assurance to that goal.

No contaminants were found in the air or in any surfaces including all dust.

The construction area will be cleaned of any possible contaminants and the renovation will resume.

The YMCA is committed to providing a safe environment for members, guests and YMCA staff. We continue to work with the DEP and take whatever measures necessary to ensure a healthy environment for all.
